According to the latest research by the Africa CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 79% of Africans would consider taking a COVID-19 vaccine if it were deemed safe and effective.

This attitude contrasts great from the one in Russia, where less than 50% of the population trust any vaccine currently available, according to the poll conducted by the Public Opinion Foundation.

Some respondents in Africa expressed distrust for vaccines in general, while others were dubious of COVID-19 vaccines in particular. Recent research has revealed that those who know people who have tested positive for COVID-19 are far more likely to use it as opposed to young people in general, inhabitants of rural areas and those who believe that COVID-19 is man-made or non-existent.

Guinea

Guinea has already begun experimental vaccination using the Russian vaccine Sputnik V. The Minister of Defense Mohamed Diane and other government officials were among the first reported receiving it.

Guinea has ordered 2 million doses of Sputnik V and also placed an order for the Chinese vaccine.

According to Dr. Sakoba Keita, Director-General of the National Health Security Agency, Guinea has ordered 2 million doses of Sputnik V and also placed an order for the Chinese vaccine “in order to show the commitment of the government to go on the offensive and to use this latest strategy that served well during the Ebola”.

Egypt

In September 2020 Egyptian Pharco and Russian Direct Investment Fund agreed to secure supply of 25 million doses of Sputnik V to Egypt. Media has reported that the deal has not yet been approved by the Egyptian Ministry of Health.

Previously the possibility of producing Sputnik V in Egypt had been reported to be discussed between Russian and Egyptian officials, but the director of the Egyptian Centre for the Right to Medicine, Mahmoud Fouad, denied that fact, explaining that Egyptian laboratories’ capacities were not enough.

Algeria

According to Algerian Minister of Health Abderrahmane Benbouzid, Algeria has arranged an OTC contract for the vaccine supplies with a “Russian laboratory”.

Algeria transferred about $11.3 million to purchase 500,000 doses of Sputnik V, says Director-General for Budget Abdelaziz Fayed.

The vaccination is scheduled to start this January, according to Algerian Ministry of Health.

UPD. On January 11th the Trade Representation of Russia in Algeria (Représentation commerciale de Russie en Algérie) stated that the National Agency for Pharmaceutical Products registered Sputnik V vaccine in Algeria.

Ghana

“Every Ghanian will benefit from the vaccine”, says Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, Director of Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Service. According to him, Ghana eyes vaccines from China and Russia and has already applied for COVAX facility.

South Africa

This week Zweli Mkhize, Minister of Health of South Africa, said the state was in talks with vaccine manufacturers from the West, Russia and China. South Africa plans to have 67% of its population vaccinated by the end of the year. The vaccination is expected to begin in February.
