Since February 14, when the first case in Africa was diagnosed, the African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded 1,353,283 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 80% of which are marked as successful recoveries and 2.6% (32,625) as deaths.
More than half of all the cases have been recorded in Southern Africa (703k) and South Africa in particular (650k). However, in regard to the case fatality rate (CFR), the leader is Chad (7.4%) whereas South Africa has only 2.4%, which is even below the global average (3.2%). It may be noted that formally the leader by CFR in Africa is Western Sahara (8%), but these numbers are inaccurate as data is only available only for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic controlled land, which is approximately 20% of the whole territory.
